'Short life, long suffering', 6학년 5반이 되면서 내 SNS 문패에 새로 올린 제목이다. 태평양 건너에 계신 늙고 병든 어머니, 싸늘히 식은 연인들 처럼 떨어져 사는 피붙이들, 손바닥 부딪힐 기쁜 일도 눈시울 붉어지는 슬픔도 없이, 간하지 않은 순두부 처럼 무덤덤한 나날들, 아무도 그리워 하지 않고 아무도 미워하지 않는 가게의 마네킨 닮은 내 자신을 표현하는 말로 suffering 보다 적절한 말을 찾지 못했다.
그런 정체된 나날들 속에서 단비같은 초대를 받게 되었다. Midway international Inc.(대표 정하석, 1985 창립)에서 후원하는 BBKWA (회장 표여식) 제24차 연례총회에 회원 배우자 자격으로 참석하게 되었다.
자본주의 시장은 지속적인 이윤 추구에서 잠시 멀어지면 업계에서 영원히 사라지는 비정함에 빠진다. 하지만 우정과 비지니스 경영의 노우하우를 공유하고 있는 BBKWA의 활동은 이민생활에 활력과 윤기를 더해주는 보배라는 생각을 하게 되었다.
이런 미주한인 동포들의 모임을 물심양면 지원을 아끼지 않는 Midway가 지난 40년의 명맥을 유지하며 업계 선두주자로 자리매김하는 데에는 어떤 필연성을 느끼게 했다. 올해 후원이 Midway로 부터 받는 두번째 수혈이라고 하니 두 단체간에는 인연 이상의 무엇이 있고, 정하석 회장의 기독교 정신을 바탕으로 한 경영철학이 또한 엿보이는 듯 했다.
이번 모임에서 소개된 최근 Midway사의 R & D 팀의 역작 one pack solution 'Core'는 'one stone two birds'라는 속담이 연상되었다. 소비자들의 최대 관심사인 품질과 가격에서 당분간 적수가 없어 보였으며, 285g 이나 나가는 한 팩의 무게는 one pack solution의 진정한 승자임을 확인시켜 주는 듯 했다. 스타일에 있어서도 Mix n Match를 선호하는 젊은 소비자층에게 Core와 xtra BOHO는 최상의 조합처럼 보였다.
연례총회에서는 현 표 회장 후임으로 박의경 회원이 임기 2년의 차기회장으로 추대 되었다. 새 회장의 임기가 시작되면 현 회장은 자동 이사장으로 추대되어 지속적으로 모임의 구심점 역할을 하게되는 체계가 업무의 계속성과 효율성에서 탁월한 결과물은 낼 것으로 보였다.
현 회장과 후임 회장의 배우자들이 참석, 행사 내내 지척에서 그림자 외조를 하는 모습도 보는 이들을 흐믓하게 했다.
한편, 뷰티업계의 복병 아랍계들의 밀물같은 확장이 공동의 관심사가 된 지 수년이 되었지만, 우리로서는 뚜렷한 대응책이 없는 요즈음이다. 뷰티 타임즈 이계송 발행인은 "문화적으로 여성의 활동이 제한 받는 아랍문화권에 비해, 우리 여성들의 적극적인 활약이 향후 아랍계와의 경쟁에서 탁월한 무기이자 솔루션이 될 것"이라 역설해 공감을 얻었다. 이어서 Purejoin POS & Marketing 제프 윤 대표의 SNS를 이용하는 마케팅 전략은 듣는 이들의 동공을 키우는 시간이었다.
둘째 날은 Wig competition 과 창립 40주년 기념하는 음악회 '한여름 밤의 클래식' 이 열렸다. 트랜디하고 다양한 디자인과 색감을 자랑하는 Midway 가발을 쓴 참가자들의 아마추어 쇼와 생생한 경험을 토대로 알려준 가발에 대한 설명은 포복절도의 웃음과 함께 가발에 대한 상식도 넓히는 계기가 되었다. 더불어 긴시간 가발을 쓰는 고객들의 고충도 공감하는 시간이기도 했다.
해질 무렵 시작된 클래식 연주회는 이틀 동안 이윤과 물질 그리고 여독 가득했던 머리 속을 촉촉히 적셔주는 시간이었다. 첼로의 무게감있는 선율에 잠기다가, 바이올린이 만드는 예리함에 신경을 곤두 세우고, 피아노 소리가 던져주는 경쾌함 속을 노닐며 정신줄을 놓다시피 했다. "예술은 일상의 먼지를 털어내는 행위'라 말한 피카소는 옳았다. 바리톤 테너 소프라노 트리오가 만든 소리의 향연이 그 증거가 되었으므로...
다음 날 태평양 연안 기차 여행이 이어졌다. 나즈막한 둔덕에서 자란 포도들이 고온건조한 기온과 태평양의 바람을 맞아 이슬로 맺힌 와이너리에서는 이태백이 되었고, 마돈나 모텔에서는 동화 속의 왕과 왕비가 되어보는 호사를 누리기도 했으며, 미국판 언년이나 마당쇠가 되어 보는 씁쓸한 상상마저 달콤했던 시간이었다.
일정의 마지막 행선지는 ‘솔뱅마을’ 이었다. 덴마크 민속촌이라고도 할만 한 오밀조밀한 집들이 거대하고 독특한 풍치를 만들어 주었고, 오가는 길가의 타조 사진을 찍어 친구들에게 호주도 다녀왔다고 뻥 치라는 가이드의 농담이 다시 입가에 미소 짓게 한다.
전통적으로 미남부 사람들의 살갑고 융숭한 대접을 'Southern Hospitality'라고 한다. 이번 Midway 후원 아래 진행된 BBKWA의 연례총회에서 누린 호사와 대접에 감히 'Western Hospitality'라는 신조어를 만들어 감사함을 전해 본다.

With an elderly and ailing mother across the Pacific, blood relatives living apart like lovers who’ve gone cold, and days that pass as blandly as unsalted tofu — with neither joyful applause nor tearful sorrow — I couldn’t find a word more fitting than suffering to describe myself: someone like a mannequin in a store, missing no one and resented by none.
Amid such stagnant days, I received an invitation as welcome as rain after drought. I was invited to attend the 24th Annual General Meeting of BBKWA (President Pyoh Yuhsik), supported by Midway International Inc. (CEO Ha-Seok Chung, established in 1985), as a member’s spouse.
In a capitalist market, the moment you step away from constant profit pursuit, you risk being erased from the industry entirely. However, the activities of BBKWA — which blends friendship with shared business know-how — made me realize it is a precious source of vitality and sheen in the lives of immigrants.
Seeing how Midway has supported such Korean-American community gatherings wholeheartedly, I began to sense a certain inevitability in how the company has maintained its presence for 40 years, securing a leading position in the industry. This year marks the second sponsorship from Midway, suggesting a bond deeper than mere partnership — perhaps rooted in CEO Chung’s Christian management philosophy.
At this gathering, Midway’s R&D team introduced their latest innovation, the Core one-pack solution, which brought to mind the saying, “one stone, two birds.” With unmatched performance in the two areas consumers care about most — quality and price — it seemed to have no rival for the time being. Weighing in at 285 grams, the pack seemed to confirm its status as the true winner among one-pack solutions.
In terms of style as well, Core and Xtra BOHO appeared to be a perfect mix-and-match combination for younger consumers who favor that kind of flexibility.
During the general meeting, member Eui-Kyung Park was nominated as the next president for a two-year term, succeeding the current president. Upon the start of the new term, the current president will automatically become the board chair, ensuring a leadership structure that promotes continuity and efficiency in the organization.
The presence of both the current and incoming presidents’ spouses throughout the event — quietly offering unwavering support from close by — also left a warm impression on all who attended.
Meanwhile, it's been several years since the rapid expansion of Arab players in the beauty industry became a shared concern. Yet, we still find ourselves without a clear counterstrategy. Lee Kaysong, publisher of Beauty Times, emphasized that “compared to the Arab cultural sphere, where women’s public activity is often restricted, the proactive engagement of our women will be a powerful weapon and solution in future competition.” His remark resonated with many in the audience.
Following that, Jeff Yoon, CEO of Purejoin POS & Marketing, shared his marketing strategies utilizing social media — a session that widened many eyes with fresh insight.
On the second day, the event featured a Wig Competition and a classical concert titled "A Midsummer Night’s Classics" commemorating Midway’s 40th anniversary. The amateur fashion show, with participants donning Midway’s trendy and colorful wigs, brought bursts of laughter and joy. Their real-life testimonials and explanations about wearing wigs not only entertained but also deepened attendees' knowledge. It was also a chance to empathize with the long-term struggles of wig users.
As dusk fell, the classical concert began — a moment that gently washed away two days of profit-minded thoughts, material concerns, and lingering fatigue. Immersed in the cello’s rich resonance, startled by the violin’s piercing sharpness, and lifted by the piano’s brightness, our minds wandered freely. Picasso was right when he said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” The sonic feast created by the baritone-tenor-soprano trio was proof of that truth.
The following day brought a train trip along the Pacific coast. In a winery nestled in low hills — where grapes grew under high heat, dry air, and ocean breeze — we became poets like Li Bai. At the Madonna Motel, we indulged like kings and queens in a fairytale. Even the bittersweet imagination of becoming American versions of kitchen maids or farmhands turned out to be sweetened by the moment.
The final destination was Solvang Village. This quaint Danish-style village, with its charming and compact houses, created a unique and grand visual harmony. On the way, our guide jokingly suggested we take pictures with roadside ostriches and tell our friends we’d been to Australia — a comment that once again brought a smile to our lips.
In the American South, warm and generous hospitality is called “Southern Hospitality.” After experiencing such luxury and kindness throughout BBKWA’s annual meeting, graciously sponsored by Midway, I would like to coin a new phrase in gratitude: “Western Hospitality.”
During a quiet hour with few customers, I was proofreading this article when one of our regulars — stylishly rocking a look with Core and Xtra BOHO — walked in and shook her hair, asking, “Do u like it?”
Between the strands of her hair, I could almost see glimpses of President Pyo and Secretary-General Park bustling tirelessly throughout the event.
